Eleftheria Deko, the designer behind the new lighting of Acropolis won the LIT Lighting Design of the Year Award for 2021.
The new lighting of one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world was unveiled in September 2020 during a spectacular ceremony that was live-streamed around the world.
“The image of the Acropolis, our foremost monument, reflects and transmits the image of the country. The Onassis Foundation has kindly offered to undertake the significant sponsorship of a series of projects at the Acropolis,” said Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni at the time.
Acropolis lighting highlights the architecture of the monument
The new lighting gradients vary in intensity and shades of white between the outer and inner parts of the monuments, in order to highlight their architectural elements and enhance the perception of their reliefs, depth, and plasticity.
Additionally, as part of the technical upgrade, any light pollution created by the lighting has now also been reduced.
The LIT Design Awards was created to recognize the efforts of talented international lighting product designers and lighting implementers. The organization believes that lighting is both an art and a science, and it is one of the most important elements of design.
“We are thrilled that the Audiovisual presentation of the new Lighting of the Acropolis, received a PLATINUM award in the international MUSE creative awards in the events category,” Deko said about the honor.
Eleftheria Deko, a pioneer in the lighting of private, public spaces
Eleftheria Deko and Associates has been designing, studying and realizing lighting of a high aesthetic value for both public and private spaces since 2001. The company has designed lighting for residences, museums and monuments, hotels, restaurants, shopping malls, and building facades.
The firm’s main focus is to create lighting design strategies that deliver maximum visual impact, highlighting the architecture, integrated with the surroundings while emphasizing energy savings and sustainability.
As Deko has said in a recent interview, “just as in music, pauses play an essential role, so too in lighting, shade and darkness are very important. The balance between the variations is a basic component of good lighting, in theater as well as in architecture.”
